The 24th Hike Across Delaware will take place on Saturday, November 3, 2018. The 15-mile hike begins with checkin at Battery Park in Delaware City, De. between 8:15 and 8:45 a.m.
Participants then take buses to the Delaware-Maryland border at North Chesapeake City where hikers will follow a route along the north side of the C&D Canal to the Delaware River. The course is mostly flat and is situated in land designated as the Canal Wildlife Zone.
Registered hikers will rest at the 10-mile mark along the trail in St. Georges, De. where food, water and portable toilets will be available. Those who don't want to walk the full 15-mile course can arrange to be picked up.
Those who have participated in previous years may notice some changes to the course. "We now use the whole paved trail from North Chesapeake City to Delaware City. The mileage is 15 plus a little," said Tom Maddux of the Wilmington Trail Club. "The early November weather is usually ideal, and the trees and shrubbery sporting their fall foliage, combined with the opportunity for a close view of boats, ships and barges using the waterway, make for a pleasant journey along the trail," he said.
General registration costs $17 and includes bus transportation from Delaware City to North Chesapeake City, food, water, portable toilets at the 10-mile mark, and a Hike Across Delaware t-shirt. The cost for members of the Wilmington Trail Club is $14.
For more information, contact Tom Maddux of the Wilmington Trail Club or register for the hike at the club's website.
Helpful Tips
- What to Bring
While water is provided at the 10-mile point, we suggest bringing a good supply of water and snacks for along the way. Sunscreen is helpful even in November. It can get pretty warm in Delaware even in November but you should dress in layers in case it gets cold.
