Peng Chau Island is an off the beaten path but easily accessible day trip destination in Hong Kong. For those that want to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city like our family did, Peng Chau is a great choice. The villages are quaint and the people friendly. Well kept hiking trails offer nice views of the magnificent island and its surroundings. A few stores and restaurants bring added convenience. There are even a few nice playgrounds for children to burn off energy. Unfortunately the main beach on the island is definitely not a beach spot I would recommend. Our family enjoyed a nice day trip outing here, accessing via a ferry from Central. It turned out to be better than we expected and we appreciated the slower pace and more peaceful setting that allowed us to escape the big city for a day.

In 1993, before China returned Hong Kong to it, I made multiple visits to Peng Chau Island. The ‘outer islands’ used to be very quiet with mostly fisher villages and camping resorts for youth and such. I’m sure it is much more developed now.
